Building history
Predecessor church
Since the beginning of the 12th century there has been a church building on the site of today's Protestant town church. This previous building was rebuilt in 1469 after the destruction in the Hessian civil war . The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) also forced repairs to the church building. After the Homberg Synod in 1526, the parishes in the Landgraviate of Hesse became Protestant .
There is evidence of an organ since 1676; this had to be restored for the first time in 1699. Broken vaults in 1760 and 1767 repeatedly caused great damage to the organ.
The church tower rebuilt between 1684 and 1686 had to be repaired after damage in 1788. In 1812, a stone falling from the tower fatally injured a boy.
New building
After the decision was made to build a new building due to the frequent damage, the old church building was demolished in 1841. The bell cage of the previous church with the three bells , the wooden sermon chair , the altar stones , the church clock, the organ and the old pulpit were temporarily stored .
On July 15, 1843, the foundation stone for the new building of the city church was laid. A year later, in 1844, the bells could be installed in the new church tower. The solemn inauguration of the church took place on November 23, 1845. The organ was reinstalled in 1846. The construction cost 10,371 thalers .
The font from 1100 was sold in 1842 for seven thalers and was first used as a fountain and later as a feeding trough . In 1954 the baptismal font came back into the possession of the Protestant community, was restored in 1973 and re-erected on November 4, 1973.
As part of the renovation of the roof structure, the gable cross was dismantled and re- gilded in 2010 . On October 30, 2010, it was put back in its original place as part of a solemn ceremony.
