The Evangelical City Church in Lengerich in the Tecklenburger Land dates from the 14th and 15th centuries in its current form. The church and parish belong to the Tecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia .

history

A first church was probably built between the 9th and 11th centuries on the Lengerich property of the Herford women's monastery . A second church, of which it is certain that it was already built of stone, was built in the second half of the 12th century. A third church in the same location dates from the second quarter of the 13th century, and documents from 1327 show that it housed an altar dedicated to St. Margaret .

Between 1320 and 1530, an allegedly miraculous statue of St. Margaret inside the church attracted many pilgrims from northern Germany. The church soon became too small for a place of pilgrimage and was therefore expanded from the second half of the 14th century. With the completion of the renovations in 1497, the church received its present form. The floor area of the now late Gothic hall church was significantly enlarged with the renovation.

In 1527, Count Konrad von Tecklenburg introduced the Reformation in the partial rule of Rheda. He probably only ended the veneration of St. Margaret after taking over the government (1534) and removed her allegedly miraculous statue from the church. In 1588, his grandson Arnold II (IV.) Von Bentheim-Tecklenburg replaced the Lutheran with the Reformed creed, to which the parish of the town church still belongs today.

organ

The organ of the town church was built in 1835 by the Westphalian organ builder Heinrich Wilhelm Breidenfeld . In the 1950s the instrument was rebuilt in the neo-baroque style and restored again in the years 2002–2003 by the organ building company Klais (Bonn), whereby the historical condition was restored - as far as possible. The purely mechanical instrument has 37  registers on three manuals and a pedal .
