The Evangelical Work for Diakonia and Development e. V. (EWDE) is a work founded in October 2012 by the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), old denominational churches and free churches . It was created through the merger of the Diakonisches Werk der EKD (with bread for the world ) and the Evangelical Development Service . It is based in Berlin-Mitte .

History / tasks

In 2008 it was decided to merge the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Church in Germany with the Evangelical Development Service. In October 2012, we started working together in the Evangelical Work for Diakonia and Development. Berlin was chosen as the headquarters of the plant. The previous locations of the plants in Stuttgart , Bonn and Berlin-Dahlem were given up and merged in the new office. The plant was officially inaugurated on March 14, 2013.

The task of the work is to network and bundle the social work and development cooperation of the Protestant churches in Germany.

The organization includes in particular:

  • Bread for the World (helping people to help themselves to improve the living conditions of poor and disadvantaged people in so-called developing countries, since 1959)
  • " Churches help churches " (support for Protestant minorities in Europe, Orthodox churches and churches and their local congregations overseas)
  • Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (short- or medium-term aid; financing primarily through donations, but also from federal and European Community funds)
  • Scholarship programs through which foreign students can study at German universities for one to two years
  • Diakonie Deutschland with 17 regional and 69 professional associations of diakonia
