The Evergreen State class is a series of three ferries that were commissioned by the US shipping company Washington State Ferries from the Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company in Puget Sound and entered service from 1954 to 1959. The three ships have been replaced by the Olympic class and taken out of service since 2015 .

history

The construction of the three Evergreen State class ferries was decided in 1951 to replace the tonnage of Washington State Ferries, which was largely from the 1920s and 1930s. The designer WC Nickum was responsible for the design of the ships. The lead ship Evergreen State was laid down in 1953 in the Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company in Puget Sound and put into service in November 1954.

The two sister ships Klahowya and Tillikum were only put into service several years after the Evergreen State in 1958 and 1959. The three ferries were used on different routes in Washington State and remained in service for over fifty years (the Evergreen State even over sixty years).

With the commissioning of the first Olympic-class ship in 2014, the three Evergreen State- class units were gradually withdrawn from service. The Evergreen State was the first ship to be retired in December 2015 . Her sister ships were to follow her in the order of construction in 2017 and 2018. While the Klahowya was retired in 2017 as planned, Washington State Ferries extended the service until 2023.

Technology and equipment

The Evergreen State class ferries are almost identical in construction, but differ from one another in terms of their draft and, above all, their passenger capacity. The Tillikum transports up to 1,200 passengers, the Klahowya only 800. The Evergreen State is in the middle with up to 981 passengers.

All ships have several large seating areas, lounges and restaurants that are furnished in a simple and functional style. The ferries are driven by two electric motors each, which can generate a total of 2,583 hp. The top speed is 16 knots while the normal cruising speed is 13 knots.
