After his wife is killed in a car accident, successful brain surgeon Dr. Andrew Brown, with his 15-year-old son, Ephram, and his 9-year-old daughter, Delia, moved from New York City to the idyllic surroundings of Everwood , a town in the middle of the snowy Rocky Mountains , to make a fresh start. While Ephram is finding it particularly difficult to adjust to the new environment, Andrew opens a practice where he treats patients for free. For the residents of Everwood, this is a clear sign that the grieving widower has gone mad . Edna, the mother of the unsympathetic Dr. Harold Abbott, takes Andrew's side and starts working as a medical assistant. Dr. Abbott, however, absolutely not, so he forbids his children, Amy and Bright, from associating with the Brown family. | |||||||

The father-son relationship between Andy and Ephram grows tighter when Andy puts his work in front of the family once again. Andy has fewer problems with Delia, who has already settled in well in Everwood . Then she gets into trouble at school when she questions the antiquated methods of her teacher. Meanwhile, Ephram gets more and more interested in Amy at the annual festival until her brother informs him that her boyfriend is in a coma and she hopes Andy will operate on him. | |||||||

The baby that Andy's neighbor and friend, Nina, is carrying is not her own. She is the surrogate mother for an almost 50-year-old woman and is treated as a leper after the other residents get wind of it. Andy's clumsy help in defending her does more harm than good, yet she turns to him when the labor pains . Amy humiliates Ephram because she first invites him to a party and later drops him off because her friends don't like him. Meanwhile, Delia runs into the bully Magilla and tries to make friends with him. | |||||||
