The Evolution Museum of the Institute of Paleobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences ( Polish: Muzeum Ewolucji Instytutu Paleobiologii PAN ) is a natural history museum in Warsaw . It is located in the Warsaw Palace of Culture in the Śródmieście district .

history

The history of the museum began in 1968 with an exhibition on the dinosaurs of the Gobi Desert , which remained open until 1984, but then had to close because the premises were used for other purposes. However, the Institute of Paleobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) succeeded in taking over the rooms of the Zoological Museum, which was closed in 1976, in another part of the Palace of Culture, and in founding the Evolution Museum. In 1985 a permanent exhibition on the evolution of terrestrial vertebrates was opened, which contained a significant part of the finds from the Gobi. Part of the exposition was reserved for modern land animals, especially insects and birds from the collections of the PAN Zoological Institute. The permanent exhibition has been continuously expanded and modernized since then.

exhibition

The core of the permanent exhibition is formed by the fossils of vertebrates of the Nemegt Formation from the Maastrichtian , which were found in the Gobi desert by joint Polish-Mongolian paleontological expeditions under the direction of Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska from 1963 to 1971. The largest room in the museum is almost completely filled by the skeleton of a sauropod of the genus Opisthocoelicaudia . Since the neck and head of the animal were not found, the skeleton was completed with the skull of a Nemegtosaurus , whereby paleontologists suspect that Opisthocoelicaudia and Nemegtosaurus are synonyms of the same genus. In a further room there are two skeletons of the Tarbosaurus , one in the original, but according to outdated anatomical ideas standing upright with the tail lying on the floor, and one in a copy according to the current state of research. Other exhibits from the Gobi include fossilized dinosaur eggs, fossils of Protoceratops , Ankylosaurs , Deinocheirus and Coelurosaurs, and skulls of primitive mammals .

Another focus of the exhibition are finds made by a team led by Jerzy Dzik (* 1950) in 1993 near Krasiejów in the Polish Opole Voivodeship , a cemetery of Triassic reptiles and amphibians , which were found here in around 20 species. On display are the fossils and reconstructions of numerous aquatic and land animals such as the early dinosaur Silesaurus, which was first found here .

public relation

The museum sees its task in popularizing knowledge about the evolution of life on earth. This is not only served by the permanent exhibition and the changing temporary expositions. At the museum, scientists from the Institute for Paleobiology and guests from outside also give popular science lectures on palaeontological, geological and evolutionary biological topics. The museum offers training courses for teachers and a museum education service.

The popular science magazine Rocznik Muzeum Ewolucji ( ISSN 1689-8540) is published once a year at the Evolution Museum.
