Ewa Barycka (born March 21, 1979 in Opole , Poland; died February 1, 2008 ) was a Polish paleontologist.

Career

Ewa Barycka was interested in dinosaurs from an early age and wanted to study paleontology . In 1994 she was diagnosed with leukemia and successfully treated. Due to the long recovery from this disease, it was not possible for her to start studying palaeontology in Warsaw as planned. Instead, she began studying biology at the University of Opole . In June 2000 the Polish Academy of Sciences in Krasiejów near Opole carried out excavations of vertebrate fossils from the Late Triassic, in which Barycka took part. In 2001 Barycka completed her bachelor's degree in biology and in 2003 her master's degree in environmental protection. In both her bachelor's and master's thesis she dealt with the excavation in Krasiejów. She then began studying for a doctorate at the Museum and Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She specialized in feline predators, especially Felidae and Hyanidae. In her doctoral thesis, she mainly dealt with cave lions and cave hyenas . At the end of 2007, Barycka was able to successfully complete this before she was diagnosed with leukemia again a few days later. Barycka died on February 1, 2008 of a cerebral haemorrhage during chemotherapy .

Her doctoral thesis was published posthumously in 2008 under the title Middle and Late Pleistocene Felidae and Hyaenidae of Poland in the Fauna Poloniae, New Series, which is described in a review by Martin Sabol as a standard work on predators of the European Pleistocene.
