Ewald Meyer
Ewald Meyer (born September 23, 1911 in Berlin ; † February 13, 2003 in Saarbrücken ) was a German painter and graphic artist.
Life
After completing school education with the final examination, Ewald Meyer passed the entrance examination at the Berlin Art Academy (today the Academy of the Arts ). He became a master student of Emil Orlik and Hans Meid and the style of his drawings prompted Käthe Kollwitz and Max Liebermann to grant him a private scholarship in 1931. From this and other grants, Meyer financed study trips to Italy and North Africa.
Ewald Meyer was an opponent of the Hitler dictatorship and in 1939 became a member of the Rote Kapelle resistance movement . During this time, numerous graphic exhibits and graphics were created against the regime, which were often used in leaflets. He also illustrated the volume of poetry Kuttel Daddeldu edited by Joachim Ringelnatz , banned in Germany and printed in Norway.
After returning to Berlin from captivity from the camp in canton Voves , he earned his living as a freelance painter and graphic artist . He also worked as a freelancer for the Ostberliner Berliner Zeitung , where he worked as an illustrator . When Ewald Meyer was no longer able to get to work as a result of the building of the Wall in 1961, Hermann Wedekind, then director of the Saarbrücken State Theater , employed him as a set designer and head of the painting hall in the Saarland capital.
Exhibitions
Ewald Meyer had exhibitions in many European countries. An exhibition "Zeitzeugnisse" took place in 2007 posthumously in Mainz. Many of his pictures and drawings, which often deal with the horrors of war and the Holocaust , are in private collections and are shown in public buildings.
