Ewald Sprave

Ewald Sprave (born December 21, 1902 in Dortmund ; † August 21, 1984 ) was a social democratic local politician from Dortmund and held the city's mayor's office from 1962 to 1969 .

Life

Sprave had been a member of the SPD since 1926 and was elected to the Dortmund city council in 1933. During the time of National Socialism , as a social democrat, he suffered from repression and persecution.

Sprave was re-elected to the Dortmund City Council in 1946, to which he was a member until 1969. In 1962 he was elected mayor of the city of Dortmund and was thus Deputy Mayor Dietrich Keuning . He held the mayor's office until 1969.

For his services he was awarded the ring of honor and the city plaque of the city of Dortmund. In 1969 the council gave him the title of "former mayor". In addition, the Ewald-Sprave-Weg in Menglinghausen was named after him.

The SPD in Dortmund's Hombruch district awards the Ewald Sprave Prize once a year for “courageous and committed behavior against hatred and violence, for tolerance, social commitment and human dignity”.
