Dietrich Keuning (born September 27, 1908 in Dortmund ; † March 23, 1980 there ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

After graduating from elementary school, Keuning completed an apprenticeship as a building fitter. He continued his education in evening courses and then worked as a draftsman for steel structures. From 1930 to 1932 he studied at the boarding school for economics in Leipzig . From 1934 he worked for the Hörder Bergwerks- und Hütten-Verein (Dortmund-Hörder Hüttenunion AG), where he had been a member of the works council from 1946. In 1947 he became chairman of the works council. He was also a member of the VEW board from 1961 to 1974 .

politics

Keuning had been a member of the SPD since 1930. He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1949 to 1961. In parliament he represented the constituency of Dortmund II , in which he was always directly elected.

Keuning was also a council member of the city of Dortmund from 1953 to 1969 and served as the city's mayor from 1954 to 1969 . In this function he was, among other things, chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalia City Council and a member of the Presidium of the German City Council .

Honors

Dietrich Keuning was made an honorary citizen of the city of Dortmund in 1973. Before that, he had already been awarded the Ring of Honor (1964) and the city plaque (1969) of the city. In 1970 he received the Great Federal Cross of Merit . One and a half years before his death, Keunig received the honorary title of "Former Mayor" of his hometown on September 27, 1978.

The Dietrich-Keuning-Haus leisure center in the northern part of Dortmund is named after Keuning .
