Heinrich Sondermann (born January 5, 1928 in Langendreer ; † autumn 1986 ) was a German politician ( SPD ) and Lord Mayor of Dortmund .

Life

Heinrich Sondermann was born the son of a miner. After graduating from high school in 1946, he studied at the Pedagogical Academy in Dortmund and became a primary school teacher, later rector, then school councilor in Wanne-Eickel . Sondermann had been a member of the SPD since 1958, a member of the Dortmund City Council since 1967, and Lord Mayor from 1969 to 1973 . At the same time he was a member of the main committee of the German Association of Cities . After his tenure as Lord Mayor, he was Dortmund's alderman and took over the management of the city's school and culture department. At the city council he acted as chairman of the school committee.

Heinrich Sondermann had been married to Elli Feierabend (1925–2008) since 1954 and had two sons.

Acting as Lord Mayor

During Sondermann's time as Dortmund's mayor, the town twinning with Leeds was concluded in 1970. The greatest challenge of his tenure was the Dortmund tram riots, the "Red Dot" campaign in March / April 1971, during which the trams were blocked for weeks and the Fare increases from the operator, the municipal company Stadtwerke Dortmund, was requested.

Honors

Heinrich Sondermann became Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1970 and Commander of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1973 . A central square is named after him in his home town of Lütgendortmund .
