Plot and characters

The anime and manga are primarily about the attempts of the Across organization under Lord Il Palazzo to conquer the world and rid it of all bad things. The organization wants to first conquer the city of F in F prefecture , in the Manga Fukuoka , Fukuoka . The anime explains it like this: "To be careful and avoid doing too much work, this is where we will focus (The City). This also leaves room for setbacks."

Across

The hyperactive girl Excel that many parallels to the later Puni Puni Poemi occurring Poemy owns, has just finished school when she blindly running full of joy across the street and is hit by a truck. After her death in the ambulance, she is brought back to life by the great will of the macrocosm, represented as the “galaxy with arms and legs” , and now she joins this organization, which thus has two members. She wants to get the attention of Ilpalazzo, with whom she fell in love. Due to her over-the-top nature, however, with the exception of her first assignment to murder Koshi Rikdo in the first episode, she does not manage to fulfill an assignment. During the briefing, she never manages to keep her mouth shut and Ilpalazzo regularly uses violence to prevent her from continuing.

Later, Hyatt joins the organization. She is an alien, but looks like a human. She has a very weak body and therefore spits up blood frequently. She often falls over unexpectedly and seems almost dead before she can get up again and again. In contrast to Excel, she is a very calm person and conscientiously carries out her tasks, insofar as her health situation allows it. She is under Excel and carries out the given orders together with her. In the end, Excel is rejected by Ilpalazzo and even fights him, Hyatt takes her place.

Department of City Security

The main opponent of Across is the Department of City Security at Kabapu. He seems to have a position with unlimited power and resources in the city. Tooru Watanabe, Daimaru Sumiyoshi and Norikuni Iwata are still unemployed at the beginning of the plot, but will soon be employed by Kabapu. Tooru fell in love with Hyatt without knowing that she works for Across. In addition , Misaki Matsuya and the two gynoids Ropponmatsu 1 and 2 belong to the Department of City Security . The six together make up the Daitenzin , a Sentai team.

Subplots

The worker Pedro, who immigrated to Japan from America, is persecuted by blows of fate. His wife cheats on him at home with another man, he escapes into an affair with the (female) Great Will of the Macrocosm . This has the ability to restart the course of action and thus, for example, bring back the dead. But it later emerges that a certain man has a relationship with Pedro's wife and the Great Will . In addition, the two women are one and the same person.

Shin'ichi Watanabe as Nabeshin

In most of the episodes, Nabeshin appears, an adventurer who repeatedly bailed out some people and who seemed to be able to pull weapons out of nowhere. He has already lost many comrades-in-arms in his countless battles. Towards the end he helps Pedro against this man , because he is also his enemy.

Excel also catches the dog Menchi at the beginning of the series. She wants to keep this as a food reserve because she is constantly in need of money. The dog often tries to flee, but never really succeeds.

Going too far , going too far

Manga

The Manga Excel Saga was developed by Rikudo from the Dōjinshi Municipal Force Daitenzin , which he had already started during his school days.

The manga has appeared in Japan in the Young King OURs magazine published by Shōnen Gahōsha since 1996. It has not yet been completed and has been summarized in 25 anthologies so far.

Anime

The anime series follows a different storyline than the manga. After Rikudo, the production of the anime was initiated by Victor Entertainment , who then, together with Shonen Gahosha, asked him to implement it as an anime.

Conception of the anime

The series was originally produced for TV Tokyo’s Japanese night program. Since the authors were given complete freedom of action, Excel Saga is characterized above all by a large amount of twisted humor. In almost each of the 26 episodes a different genre is parodied. Despite this constant change of genre, there are recurring scenes and plot elements. The 26th episode was only produced for DVD release and shows scenes that could not have been broadcast even in the night TV program. An attempt was made so far to go as possible, as is the final episode then "going too far", Too far walking .

Excel Saga is criss-crossed by several individual storylines, each of which contains independent characters and only touches each other sporadically. Characters from real life also appear, such as B. the author of the Excel saga manga Rikudou Koushi and the director Shin'ichi Watanabe (as "Nabeshin").

Because of the very extraordinary humor, Excel Saga is both loved and hated among anime fans, as it is not accessible to everyone.
