Excruciation is a Swiss Death Doom band from Zurich .
history
Excruciation was founded in 1984 as a thrash metal band by guitarist José Venegas and drummer Mat Arani. Guitarist Marcel Bosshart and bassist DD Lowinger soon joined them.
When the singer Eugenio Meccariello joined in 1985, they recorded their first demo cassette The Fourth Apocalyptic Rider . Actually not intended as an official release, it made its way to New York via detours , where it was played on college radios and was at the top of the underground charts. In the following year they released the demo cassette First Assault with the new drummer Andreas Renggli and began to give concerts in German-speaking countries. An EP called Last Judgment sold over 15,000 copies. This was followed by appearances with Young Gods , Sodom , Messiah , Samael and first concerts as headliners, but without founding member José Venegas, who had since left the band. In 1988 they released another demo called Prophecy Of Immortality , which sold over 2,500 copies. Abyss of Time followed a year later and guitarist Goerge Hauser joined the band.
Another demo called Act of Despair was followed in 1991 by a best-of album Anno Domini - An Anthology of the Past , which was distributed in Europe by Turbo International and in the USA by JL America . Over 20,000 of them were sold. Despite the planning of a new album in a renowned studio in Florida , the band broke up because of personal differences.
In 2005, Andreas Renggli brought the band together again together with José Venegas and an EP called Arise , limited to 566 copies , was recorded, followed a year later by the live album The Return , which was recorded in the Zurich Abart Music Club .
