Exivi de paradiso is an Apostolic Constitution issued on May 6, 1312 at the Council of Vienne by Pope Clement V , in which the Rule of Francis is precisely assessed . It was provided with 27 severe prohibitions, 12 admonitions, 6 pieces of advice and 12 conditions for accepting novices. The text was prepared by a commission taking into account the opinions of both currents of the order and has been included in the Corpus Iuris Canonici with the Clementines (V.11.1) .

Vows of Franciscan Poverty

One focus was the poverty struggle within the Franciscan order, here the spiritual and ascetic use of earthly goods had spread. On this basis it was understood that poverty consists in living without property and confining itself to the essentials. The then incumbent Minister General (1304–1313), Gonsalvus von Balboa, helped clarify the disputed poverty issue, but was surprised with this constitution, which had been decided in the spirit of the spiritual .

Explanation

Clemens V took up the issue of poverty again and stated that a worrying question had arisen among the friars. The question is whether they are obliged to use things strictly, little or poorly because of the obligation to follow their rule? Some of them believe and say that because of the vow they have been given the strictest renunciation. Others, on the contrary, claim that their vows do not oblige them to commit poverty that is not explicitly stated in the rule.

clarification

With this letter the Pope intended to calm the brothers down. At the same time he wanted to give them a conscience help and thus end the arguments. He explained that the Friars Minor were subject to a particularly strict obligation by virtue of their obligation to follow the rules and therefore had to interpret and live the vow of poverty in an ascetic manner.

instructions

The Pope first made it clear that all rules of the order were drawn up, approved and issued by the Holy Father . Therefore, the friars are not bound to any evangelical advice, but rather to the established rules, when receiving goods, the vows of poverty are decisive and therefore to be observed, in addition, those of Nicholas III apply. (Bulle Exiit qui seminat ) established provisions on the possession of goods.

Finally, he imposed a clear fasting rule on the friars and added that the friars are not allowed to own gardens, vineyards or similar facilities. But they are also not allowed to own excessively large church houses and monasteries, instead they should live in simple and modest buildings.
