Exobasidium disterigmicola is a mushroom art family of Nacktbasidienverwandten (Exobasidiaceae) from the order Ustilaginomycotina . It lives as an endoparasite on Disterigma humboldtii . Symptoms of the infestation by the fungus are witch's broom , red discoloration of the leaves of the host plants and mycelium on the underside of the leaves. The species is common in large parts of Ecuador .

features

Macroscopic features

Exobasidium disterigmicola is initially invisible to the naked eye. Symptoms of the infestation are primarily increased branch formation with simultaneously decreasing branch strength. Later the leaves turn reddish at the branch ends and a mycelium carpet appears on their underside .

Microscopic features

As with all naked basidia , the mycelium of Exobasidium disterigmicola grows intercellularly and forms suction threads that grow into the host's storage tissue. The fungus has a monomitic hyphae structure made up of purely generative hyphae 1.2 to 3 µm thick. A sexual form with basidia has not yet been observed. The conidia of the species are 12–15.5 × 2.8–3.2 µm in size and milky-hyaline.

distribution

The known distribution area of Exobasidum disterigmicola extends over the Cartago and Alajuela of Costa Rica . But it probably also coincides with the range of the host.

ecology

The host plant of Exobasidium disterigmicola is Disterigma humboldtii from the heather family . Since only the anamorph of the fungus has been found so far , one can only speculate about the development cycle.
