The Expedition Range is a mountain range in the central highlands of Queensland in Australia . The Range is 47 kilometers from Rolleston and approximately 530 kilometers northwest of Brisbane .
Surname
In 1844 the Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt named the mountain range on his first expedition to Australia . He named one of the mountains of the Expedition Range Mount Nicholson (770 meters high) after Dr. Charles Nicholson, who had put forward the idea of an overland expedition through northeast Australia to Port Essington in the Council of New South Wales .
landscape
The elevations are made of sandstone . Robinson Creek cut its way across the area, creating a 100-meter-high gorge. The mountainous region is characterized by further gorges and sandstone cliffs. The Expedition National Park is located in the Expeditions Range . The Comet River flows along the western slopes of the Expedition Range and then north to Rolleston . The Dawson Highway crosses the northern part of the Expedition Range.
Flora and fauna
The area is dominated by large eucalyptus forests . Cabbage Tree Palms ( Livistona australis ) are common on the river banks and in the flat areas there are groups of Brigalow ( Acacia harpophylla ) and bushes.
The fauna is comparable to the other high-altitude sandstone areas in the central highlands of Queensland. Birds live on the edge of the forest, as do whiptail wallabies .
Others
The mountain range plays a role in the novel Landscape of Farewell (2007) by Alex Miller .
