The Roman Catholic branch church Langenzersdorf-Dirnelwiese is located in the Dirnelwiese district of the Langenzersdorf municipality in the Korneuburg district in Lower Austria . It is consecrated to St. Joseph the Worker and is part of the Deanery Korneuburg in the Vicariate Unter dem Manhartsberg of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The building is a listed building .

Location description

The church is located at Krottendorferstraße 48 in the Langenzersdorf district of Dirnelwiese, only a few hundred meters from the Vienna city limits.

history

It was not until the Viennese Danube regulation between 1870 and 1875 that the district of Dirnelwiese became settable. The oldest settlement on the Dirnelwiese is dated 1920. After initially sparse development, the area was gradually settled from the 1950s. With the population increase in Dirnelwiese in the 1950s, the demand for an own church building increased. In the summer of 1956, a chapel wagon from the Archdiocese of Vienna regularly came to the Dirnelsiedlung so that the population had the opportunity to visit the mass at the settlement. However, this has not been a satisfactory permanent solution. With the help of the Korneuburg District Commission and the Vienna Church Building Association, a former military barrack was acquired in 1957 and set up on the property provided for it at Krottendorfer Straße 50. With the help of numerous settlers in the Dirnelsiedlung, the barrack was converted into a prayer room. On December 22, 1957, it was consecrated as a branch church of the Strebersdorf parish by Archbishop Franz Jachym to St. Joseph the Worker. Due to the rapid increase in population in the Dirnelwiese, the church building soon became too small and therefore enlarged in 1968. At the end of the 1970s, the old military barracks were already very dilapidated and the roof and walls were damaged. Since a renovation of the existing building fabric no longer made sense, architect Roland Rainer could be won over to the new building of the church. On August 20, 1982, work began on the new building under the direction of city architect Walter Meindorfer , according to plans by Roland Rainer. Except for the construction of the bell tower, the construction work on the church building was completed by Christmas 1982 and the interior furnishings were almost completely finished. The bell tower was built from mid-January 1983 in a four-week construction period. The existing bell was then transferred to the new bell tower and provided with an electric bell. In 1986 another bell was added. The new church was consecrated on March 19, 1983 by Archbishop Franz Jachym.

Since the parish exposition became independent, the church has belonged to the Korneuburg deanery . This circumstance made it necessary that the sacristy and the church space be enlarged. The relocation of the sacristy and a new extension made it possible to gain new space. This renovation work also made it necessary to adapt the presbytery.

architecture

The church is an octagonal central building in brick construction. The bell tower, also made of brick, is free-standing.
