Ezhel (real name Ömer Sercan İpekçioğlu ; born July 1, 1990 in Ankara ) is a Turkish rapper . Musically he mixes trap , hip-hop and reggae .

life and career

Ezhel comes from a musical family. His mother was a state singer who entertained foreign guests with songs in Turkish, Arabic and Chinese. At the age of 18, then still as a reggae singer with the band Afra Tafra , he received a scholarship for the private TED Ankara College Foundation Schools . Instead of attending college, however, he began busking in 2006, which he himself called “Anatolian Urban Core / Hip-Hop / Reggae-Dub / Trap”. After the first band broke up, he and a few friends from Ankara founded the band Kökler Filizleniyor . Until 2017 he used the stage name Ais Ezhel .

His debut album "Müptezel" (Turkish for worthless ), released in 2017, was widely received. In terms of content, Ezhel deals with street life, the underground culture of the capital, but above all with socially critical issues such as child labor, poverty, sexual harassment and child abuse. He also addresses the arrest of journalists and allows Kurdish words to flow into his texts, which can be seen as a political statement in times of the Turkish-Kurdish conflict.

His song Geceler (German: Die Nights ) was streamed over 35 million times on Spotify and earned him the title 'Freestyle King' by Hip Hop Life , but also a strong rejection in conservative circles because of nudity and violence in the video.

In May 2019, The New York Times named him one of the 15 most important contemporary European pop musicians.

In September 2019 - at the same time as Susamam of 20 Turkish rappers - he presented his dissident rap song Olay . The video includes images of the attempted coup on July 15, 2016 and protests from previous years. The video also reflects the number of women murdered in Turkey in recent years.

He gained international fame through his short-term arrest on May 24, 2018 for “inciting drug use” on the basis of a song text. He was then released conditionally on June 19, 2018.

Ezhel has a good command of the Kurdish language .
