Ezra Ted Newman

Ezra Theodore Newman (born October 1929 in New York City ) is an American physicist who deals with general relativity (GTR).

Newman attended the Bronx High School of Science , studied at New York University (bachelor's degree) and received his doctorate in 1956 with Peter Bergmann at Syracuse University , the then center of the study of ART in the USA. In 1962 he introduced the Newman-Penrose formalism there with Roger Penrose . This formalism allows the description of gravitational waves and other problems of GTR through the use of spinors . In the following year he generalized in collaboration with L. Tamburino and T. Unti Abraham H. Taub's solution of Einstein's field equations to the Taub-NUT solution. The abbreviation NUT stands for the names Newman, Unti and Tamburino.

Newman also generalized the Kerr solution found by Roy Kerr in 1963 to the Kerr-Newman solution . The Kerr-Newman solution describes rotating charged black holes .

Newman was a professor at the University of Pittsburgh , where he had been a faculty member since 1955 and is now Professor Emeritus. In addition, he was also President of the International Society for General Relativity and Gravitation. In 2011 he received the Einstein Prize for Gravitational Physics from the American Physical Society .
