Ferryman Festival Hanover
The Fährmannsfest Hannover is a three-day music and culture festival in Hannover . It takes place every year on an August weekend in the districts of Linden-Nord and Calenberger Neustadt, south of the FAUST site at the confluence of the Ihme and Leine rivers . With around 10,000 visitors, the festival is the largest alternative open-air festival in the Hanover region and is also known as “Little Woodstock on a Leash”.
Emergence
The Ferryman's Festival was born in 1983 from the spontaneous idea of organizing a small open air event for friends of rock music. It was held for the first time in August 1983 at the Justus Garden Bridge over the Ihme. Since then, the summer district festival has become a small festival with national recognition that takes place from Friday to Sunday. The conception was that it was a neighborhood festival and a “ free and outside ” event, the costs of which were covered by the sale of food and drinks. This has been retained in a large, entry-free area. However, for the demarcated area of the music festival, admission is now charged on two out of three event days to cover the costs.
Surname
The name of the festival is based on an earlier cable ferry over the Ihme, which from 1877 to 1947 connected Hanover with linden trees at the Justus Garten garden restaurant, which was then on the headland between Ihme and Leine . The bar was completely destroyed in the Second World War , and its property is now the venue. The ferry station was at the FAUST site.
Chaos days
During the chaos days in 1995 in the northern part of the city with street battles , the action shifted to Linden on August 5th, where the ferryman's festival took place. Many got the impression that a point meeting was taking place there, as appearances by the punk bands Pressureflip from Hanover and Total Chaos from Los Angeles had been announced. After a beer stand was attacked in the early evening with the words " Free beer for everyone!", The situation escalated and the police stormed the area.
Program offer
Music festival
Local music groups set the tone in the early years in the area of the ferryman's festival, which is subject to entry. It was not about big names, but about promoting young music groups, which should be given the opportunity to perform in front of a large audience on a technically high-quality stage. In the meantime, several nationally known bands are in the program every evening.
