history

Heinrich Bernhard Justus, who previously worked as a boat rental company , opened a coffee and beer bar in his house on the headland between Ihme and Leine in Hanover's Calenberger Neustadt before 1868 . In addition to the half-timbered building on the otherwise undeveloped Hanoverian Hafenstrasse, this also included a music pavilion.

After Justus' death, the original garden restaurant was expanded around 1900 with a three-story new building with a restaurant , veranda and bowling alley, as well as over 500 seats outside. After that, the restaurant was leased to various hosts. At the beginning of the 20th century, Justus Garten was an extremely popular excursion destination for Hanoverians. In the summer of 1903, the then tenant König drowned while trying to save a child who had fallen into him.

Since 1919 Karl Schmidt was the host of the Justus garden. After a “fatal” ferry accident in March 1933, he terminated the lease for the ferry and the excursion restaurant. The SA Marinesturm Hanover became a new user in 1934 . Hafenstraße became part of the site of the Üstra depot in Glocksee in 1938 . From the end of 1939, the restaurant building served as an overnight accommodation for tram personnel.

The building was completely destroyed in the Second World War . The name of the Justus Garden Bridge built in 1980 is reminiscent of the former restaurant . The Hanover Ferryman Festival, which has been taking place since 1983, uses the grounds of the garden restaurant as an event location.

The ferry at Justus Garten

Since 1877 Heinrich Bernhard Justus has operated a ferry across the Ihme to the densely populated industrial suburb of Linden right next to his restaurant . The almost eight-meter-long motorless cable ferry transported up to 30 people or animals and bicycles on every two-minute journey across the river.

In a count in 1921, almost 2,500 passengers in each direction used the ferry between a pier at Starkestrasse and Justus Garten every day. Among them were many workers from the Linden factories. After the takeover by the SA in 1934, NSDAP officials were allowed to ride for free.

In the post-war period, the no longer profitable operation of the ancient ferry was stopped. Depending on the source, this happened in 1947 or in the 1950s.
