The Halsskov – Knudshoved ferry connection was an inner-Danish car ferry route . It led between the ports of Knudshoved on the island of Fyn and Halsskov , the northern part of Korsør on the island of Sjælland , across the Great Belt .

history

The line was inaugurated on May 27, 1957. At the same time, two sections of the motorway were opened, which connected the new ferry terminals to the road network. These sections were between Halsskov and Vemmelev (9.8 km) and between Knudshoved and Hjulby (5.4 km).

Before this car ferry route was set up, vehicles were transported on ships on the Korsør – Nyborg railway ferry. The capacity there was too low, which led to long waiting times, especially in summer.

The M / S Halsskov was ordered to operate the route on November 19, 1954 and delivered to Danske Statsbaner on June 12, 1956. The 106 meter long ferry built by Helsingør Skibsværft was the first car ferry with a double deck and had space for 200 cars and 1,000 passengers . The ship was used from June 15, 1956 between Korsør and Nyborg. From May 28, 1957, the ship sailed the new ferry route.

The last ferry on the route left on June 14, 1998, when the fixed link over the Great Belt, the Storebæltsforbindelsen , was inaugurated.

The line was originally operated by Danske Statsbaner (DSB). In 1995 the ferry operation was spun off into an independent company, DSB Rederi A / S. In 1997 the name of the shipping company was changed to Scandlines .
