Fédération nationale des routes historiques

The Fédération nationale des routes historiques is the national umbrella organization founded in 2000, which brings together the member associations of the roads known in France as Les routes historiques 'The historic streets' . The 1989 by the then Caisse des monuments historiques et des sites , today the Center des monuments nationaux state called historic preservation association registered label Les routes historiques is nationally awarded subject to certain quality requirements and a historical or thematic context of the stations on either side of the corresponding road historic sites or monuments . Affiliated to the umbrella organization are twenty member associations (or routes historiques ) with a total of around 500 members, including cities, villages, castles, monasteries, churches, museums, parks and gardens.

The declared goals of the umbrella association are to increase the receptivity of both the French and foreign audiences to the cultural treasures of France and to support the association members - regardless of whether they are public organizations or private individuals - in the preservation and promotion of their cultural assets .

The road network covering 16 French regions and 50 départements should not be confused with that of the local routes touristiques 'tourist roads' . The latter are largely the result of initiatives by the tourism associations of the regions or departments , and some are also private initiatives.

The association, whose first founding of streets (at that time not yet marked) dates back to the 1970s, claims to look after the oldest thematic travel routes in France. It marks all routes with corresponding road signs, the sites and monuments connected to it with boards. One of the main requirements for individual membership is that the monument is accessible to the public during normal opening times. Both publicly and privately owned objects are connected.

The link between all the historic streets is the highlighting of France's cultural heritage . The connection between the various historical sites and monuments connected to a particular street results from the subject matter. This is very precisely defined for some streets and less precisely defined for others. Among other things, famous personalities such as Jacques Cœur , the treasurer of King Charles VII or the poet François-René de Chateaubriand , the royal house (the Valley of the Kings is understood as the Loire Valley), the noble houses such as the Dukes of Burgundy or the Dukes of Savoy, on the ladies of the Touraine and the lords of the Béarn and the Basque Country.

The current president is Madame Florence de Bouillé (as of 2007)
