Félix Esquirou de Parieu

Félix Marie Louis Pierre Esquirou de Parieu (born April 15, 1815 in Aurillac , † April 8, 1893 in Paris ) was a French politician and economist.

Political life

He was a lawyer and in 1841 became a lawyer at the Court of Appeal in Riom . He represented the Cantal department in the National Assembly in 1848 . As a Bonapartist, he was a supporter of Charles-Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, later Napoleon III. in its endeavor to dominate the second French republic .

He was Minister of Education between 1849 and 1851. After the coup d'état of December 2, 1851, Napoleon appointed him a member of the consultative commission. He became chairman of the Commission for Home Affairs, Justice and Education. At the beginning of 1852 he was appointed Councilor of State and President of the Department of Finance. A short time later he became a member of the legislature.

Between 1865 and 1870 he was Vice President of the Council of State and in 1870 he was its head. He was a senator between 1876 and 1885.

He also emerged as an economics author. He was considered a specialist in taxation. He advocated the gold standard and closer international cooperation in the monetary system since 1857 . Because of his efforts to create a single European currency, he is considered one of the pioneers of the European currency area and thus also of the European Union. However, his ideas were only realized in the form of the Latin Monetary Union .
