activities

After all railway activities on the Swedish island of Gotland were discontinued in 1960, the steam locomotive SJ N5p 3073, the former No. 3 DALHEM of Slite – Roma Järnvägsaktiebolag (SlRJ), which had built the Slite – Roma railway line , was moved to the former Romakloster railway station in 1963 erected as a technical monument . As the condition of the vehicles got worse and worse, it was considered to give them to a railway museum on the mainland.

This was the reason for some railway enthusiasts to set up an association to commemorate the history of the railway on the Swedish island of Gotland. The association was founded on February 4, 1972 in Visby . The goals were the establishment of a railway museum and the reconstruction of a museum railway under the name Gotlands Hesselby Jernväg on a small section of the former railway line Slite-Roma. In addition to the steam locomotive, the renovation of the bogie passenger car GJ Co 8 was started and the diesel locomotive SJ Z4p No. 312 was bought by SJ in Västervik .

The completely newly built 1.3-kilometer route leads from Hesselby train station in Dalhem via the Eken stop to the then Munkebos terminus. The extension of the line to a length of six kilometers to Roma has now been completed.

The first train on the new route between Hesselby and Eken ran in 1978 to mark the centenary of the railways on Gotland. In 2007 the Eken – Munkebo section was opened.

In Hesselby, the station and the goods shed as well as a workshop have been renovated, there are two car sheds and a turntable . In the Gotländska Lantmännens Centralförening warehouse from 1939 there is a railway museum, which shows the history of the railways on Gotland. In Tule, the station building, a stable building and a laundry room have been refurbished.

In 2009 the tracks of the Tule train station were rebuilt, in 2010 one section each to Kambshagetorp (towards Roma) and Stall Dalhem (towards Munkebos) followed. The tracks are not yet connected to the existing museum route. This expansion took place within the framework of the " Leader Gotland" project funded by the European Union .

On April 17, 2012, the SJ Z4p 397 locomotive was brought to Thule on a low-loader, along with other freight wagons. The first locomotive on this section since 1958 was able to transport the ballast from the gravel pit with the freight train to the further expansion of the line on the island site. On May 5, 2013, the two sections of the route were connected, and since then the museum trains have run continuously on 3.5 kilometers between Hesselby and Thule.

The line to Roma should be completed in May 2015 and put into operation between May 14th and 17th. In the summer timetable, valid from June 24, 2015, the section of the route to the new Roma train station was used as planned.
