The Z4p series was ordered by Statens Järnvägar (SJ) in the late 1940s to replace steam locomotives on Swedish narrow-gauge lines in shunting service.

prehistory

The 30 HP type Z shunting locomotives built by Bjurström AB Slipmaterial in Västervik in the 1930s were also manufactured in narrow-gauge variants for various private railways. The first more powerful diesel locomotives for the 891 mm and 1067 mm gauges did not follow until the 1940s.

Kalmar Verkstad (KVAB) built four narrow-gauge shunting locomotives in 1947 and 1948for Stockholm – Roslagens Järnvägar (SRJ), for the Uddeholm - Munkfors line of the NKlJ and Gotlands Järnväg (GJ). At the same time Statens Järnvägar ordered a series from KVAB, which were designed on the basis of the private railway locomotives. They were named Z4p and Z4t and were longer, had better running properties and were designed for a top speed of 40 km / h.

The first series received engines from KVAB that were already used in standard-gauge locomotives. The first used Scania-Vabis engine D802 was converted to the Scania-Vabis engine D812 after the first seven locomotives, this first series later also received this engine type. At this point in time, the D812 was already the standard engine for the Z43 series that was being manufactured at the same time .

Z4p

With the first series, which actually consisted of several small orders, SJ received 33 locomotives of the 891 mm track gauge. In addition, three locomotives were taken over in connection with the nationalization of the SRJ and the GJ, which were built for these companies.

The second series, built in 1956, includes 15 Z4p. These had a more modern, rounded shape and two large cab windows instead of the three small ones in the first series. The locomotives were referred to with the term sportsmodellen (sports model).

After some locomotives of the first series had been equipped with multiple controls on a trial basis and this proved to be successful, the entire second series was delivered with it. Two coupled locomotives enabled heavier trains and corresponding personnel savings.

Z4t

With the first series, which actually consisted of several small orders, SJ also received eight locomotives of the 1067 mm track gauge.

Z4tu

In 1952, the Köping – Uttersberg – Riddarhyttan railway line was nationalized and had a gauge of 1,093 mm, which was unique in Sweden. Initially, SJ used the steam locomotives they had taken over, but they wanted to replace them with diesel locomotives. The solution was to relocate existing Z4p locomotives to a gauge of 1093 mm and to designate them as Z4tu . A total of seven locomotives were rebuilt in the early 1960s. Their use was short-lived, as SJ ceased traffic on the route as early as 1966. Riddarhyttan AB continued to run part of the route for three years and therefore bought two of the locomotives. After the final adjustment, these two locomotives ( Z4tu 316 and Z4tu 317 ) were bought by NKlJ and converted back into Z4p with 891 mm gauge. The other Z4tu locomotives were also dismantled in Z4p / Z4t and used by SJ.

Private railways

The Nordmark-Klarälven Järnvägar (NKlJ) in Varmland bought two Z4P -Lokomotiven factory, each one of the older and the newer production series. In addition, in 1969 the two converted Z4tu locomotives were taken over from Riddarhyttan AB , a subsidiary of Uddeholms AB , to which NKlJ also belonged.

commitment

The locomotives were used in shunting traffic and in double traction for freight trains. Type Tp locomotives were used for even heavier trains on the SJ lines with 891 mm gauge . Mixed trains with both passenger and freight cars were also part of the tasks for the Z4p / Z4t on several routes, such as between Harmånger and Bergsjö in Hälsingland .

Most of the older type of SJ Z4p locomotives were shut down in the 1970s. Three of the locomotives were sold to Roslagsbanan in Stockholm. The Z4t locomotives became superfluous when the last 1067 mm line between Karlshamn and Ryd was closed in 1979. The newer Z4p locomotives, on the other hand, remained in use until the closure of the last SJ lines with 891 mm gauge until the mid-1980s. The last trip on an SJ route took place in 1988 between Finspång and Hjortkvarn . Operations on the line officially ceased on July 1, 1988.

The NKlJ locomotives were shut down after operations ceased in 1990. Two of the locomotives came to Roslagsbanan, which had already bought three former SJ locomotives. Today Roslagsbanan is the only company that has Z4p in regular use. The locomotives are used for work trains.

Whereabouts

Many of the locomotives of the Z4p series have stayed with museum railways. Furthermore, the Z4t 227 and Z4t 307 are in use at Setesdalsbanen in Norway, which has a 1067 mm track width. At Köping-Uttersbergs Järnvägsmuseiförening there is the former Z4tu 316 with a 1093 mm track width.
