The Slite-Roma Järnvägsaktiebolag was a Swedish stock corporation .

history

The Slite – Roma Järnvägsaktiebolag (SlRJ) was founded on March 20, 1897 to build the Slite – Roma railway between the places Slite and Roma on the island of Gotland . As early as 1896 a survey was carried out for the construction of a railway line between Slite and Roma. The director of the sugar factory in Roma was one of the initiators of this survey because the new route promised sufficient freight traffic to the sugar factory. There was also a well-frequented port in Slite . On the day it was founded, the concession for the 33-kilometer route was granted. Shares were subscribed to for 340,000 crowns and a government bond was granted for the same amount.

Under the direction of engineer E. Anderson, the line was built from 1900 and opened on May 15, 1902. In addition to the 33-kilometer long track , 5.67 kilometers of sidings were built. The rails on the line were made of steel and weighed 15.2 kilograms per meter.

In 1918 the company was on the verge of liquidation ; it was only possible to continue operating it by increasing tariffs and renegotiating existing contracts, including with the post office. But the crisis was not over. In the mid-1920s, as with Sydvästra Gotlands Järnvägsaktiebolag , bankruptcy was threatened again . Negotiations with Klintehamn-Roma Järnvägsaktiebolag regarding a takeover did not produce any result, SlRJ rejected the offer.

Instead, the Slite-Roma Järnvägsaktiebolag agreed with the Klintehamn-Roma Järnvägsaktiebolag , which operated the Klintehamn-Roma railway , from January 1, 1927, under the name Trafikförvaltningen Slite-Klintehamn, a joint operating strategy. This agreement lasted until 1940 and was then dissolved.

In 1919 the SlRJ proposed to extend the railway line north to Lärbro . The background to the proposal was that the sugar beet would not have to be transported over the Lärbro – Burgsvik railway line and via Visby . The concession for the Slite – Lärbro line was granted, but never used due to the poor economic situation. Instead, the company set up its own bus routes from 1932 . The SLRJ eventually operated eight lines.

nationalization

On July 1, 1947, the Slite Roma Järnvägsaktiebolag was converted into a state company under the same name on the basis of the general nationalization of the railways in Sweden . The name was retained until July 1, 1948. Then the railway company was integrated into the Swedish State Railways (SJ).
