The pentathlon world championship 1977/2 , also called Pentathlon world championship, was the 14th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from September 30th to October 8th 1977 in Santiago de Chile . It was the first pentathlon world championship in Chile. The tournament was part of the 1977/78 season.

history

The second pentathlon world championship in 1977, which counted for the 1977/78 season, once again showed a strong-nerved Dieter Müller . In a tournament where there were actually only two title contenders, it finally came to the expected final. For Ludo Dielis a draw would have been enough for the title. He then also won the free game with 250: 3. Müller countered in cadre 47/1 with 150: 56. After the binding game, which Dielis won with 100: 16, there was a lot to speak for the Belgian. But again Müller showed his nerve and won in cadre 71/2 with 150: 26 and finally also in three cushion with 30:20. This makes Dieter Müller the only pentathlon world champion, after Raymond Ceulemans , who was able to defend his title. The Japanese three- cushion specialist Nobuaki Kobayashi came in third . It was the only medal at world championships that the Japanese did not win in three cushion.

There was a lot of misunderstanding about the implementation of this championship. That the UMB allowed three players from Argentina to the tournament and players such as. B. Ceulemans, and Christ van der Smissen were absent, was criticized by many players and officials. But since Ceulemans was prevented, only Dielis was used as the reigning European champion for Belgium.

mode

The whole tournament was played in round robin mode.

  1. PP = game points
  2. MP = match points
  3. VGD = relative general average
  4. BEVD = Best Individual Relative Average

From 1965 the 'Portuguese table' was used to calculate the VGD. The various disciplines are calculated using a formula. A newly revised Portuguese table from October 1977 was used. The world championships in pentathlon from 1965 onwards were also known under the name 'Neo Pentathlon'. Extended series were also rated in Santiago de Chile. From 1977 the game distances were halved and instead of cadre 47/2 was played cadre 47/1.

Free game : Distance 250 points

Cadre 47/1 : distance 150 points

Binding : distance 100 points

Cadre 71/2 : distance 150 points

3 cushion : distance 30 points

The pentathlon was also played in this sequence.

In the final table, the match points achieved were evaluated before the game points and the VGD. Games that ended in a draw were rated with 2: 2 game points.
