The Modern Pentathlon World Championship 1977/1 , also called Pentathlon World Cup was the 13th tournament in the discipline of Karambolagebillards and found from 14 to 21 May 1977 Deurne instead. It was the fifth pentathlon world championship in Belgium. The tournament was part of the 1976/77 season.
history
38 years after the last title win by a German at a world championship, Dieter Müller ended the long wait. In this mammoth tournament, Müller had a decisive duel with the record world champion Raymond Ceulemans in the last round . Here the Berliner proved his fighting power. In the free game he won in one recording with 250: 0. In Cadre 47/1 there was a 150:27 victory in two shots. Ceulemans reported back on the cover and won 100-44 in 10 shots. Now came the decisive match for Müller in cadre 71/2. Because you couldn't expect him to win in three cushion against the three-cushion world champion. Müller starts with 32 points. Ceulemans also has to pass after 25 points. Then Müller went to the table and got the balls under control and ended the game with 118 points. But Ceulemans has the follow-up and can still draw if he scores 125 points. But at 35 points he had to get out and Dieter Müller was world champion. He also won the no longer decisive three-cushion game with 30:29 in 30 shots and finished the match with 8: 2 game points. Dieter Müller is the third German pentathlon world champion after August Tiedtke (1936) and Walter Lütgehetmann (1939).
The system change with shortened games and the fact that the match points were decided was not a disadvantage for the German. So he could play out his fighting strength.
mode
The whole tournament was played in round robin mode.
- PP = game points
- MP = match points
- VGD = relative general average
- BEVD = Best Individual Relative Average
From 1965 the 'Portuguese table' was used to calculate the VGD. The various disciplines are calculated using a formula. A newly revised Portuguese table from March 1977 was used. The world championships in pentathlon from 1965 onwards were also known under the name 'Neo Pentathlon'. Extended series were also rated in Deurne. From 1977 the game distances were halved and instead of cadre 47/2 was played cadre 47/1.
Free game : Distance 250 points
Cadre 47/1 : distance 150 points
Binding : distance 100 points
Cadre 71/2 : distance 150 points
3 cushion : distance 30 points
The pentathlon was also played in this sequence.
In the final table, the match points achieved were evaluated before the game points and the VGD. Games that ended in a draw were rated with 2: 2 game points.
