The Goms

The village of Fürgangen belongs to the Swiss municipality of Bellwald . There is a train station for the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn and next to it the valley station of the aerial cableway to Bellwald. The village is located on the northern slope of the main valley around 100 meters above the Rotten and above the main road, opposite Mühlebach .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1293. At that time still under the name Wrgangen or Wurgangeren , which suggests that it originated from the name Wüergang for water pipe. In 1293 the settlement still belonged to the Lords of Blandrate, when they separated from the property is unknown. The lords of Weingarten sold their rights of domination to Paul Bogner von Niederernen in 1444 , whereupon he ruled as "judex in Fürgangen". The rulership of the Bogner family has been proven until the middle of the 16th century, after which it is said to have passed to the Schiner family.

On July 12, 1887, a fire raged in the settlement. 17 roofs were destroyed, including two large houses. On July 30, 1888, the inn, including the barn and stable, burned down. The Rumpfsiedlung is located in an S-shape on the slope of the valley, a little below the two-track railway station was built in 1915 by the Brig-Furka-Disentis Railway . After 1940, a few houses and an inn were rebuilt directly above the train station. Chalets were built on the slope east of the original settlement . The valley station of the aerial cableway to Bellwald was built on the eastern side of the village in 1956. In between, the road to Bellwald crosses the railway line; this road was only opened for motorized traffic in 1969. Before that, Bellwald could only be reached via a mule track that led past the Anna Chapel.

Ecclesiastically, the residents used to belong to Ernen , for the rectorate they established a foundation in 1793, after which they were looked after by the rector of the mother church in Ernen. Because the residents often visited the church of Fiesch outside of the high holidays , they made a contribution to the construction of the church in 1884. Since May 31, 1963, they have belonged to the Bellwald parish.

Since 2015, a 280 m long suspension bridge for pedestrians has connected Fürgangen with Mühlebach.

Holy Trinity Chapel

It is known that the chapel was already in place in 1687, but not yet consecrated, which suggests that the building was completed in that year. The patronage of the Holy Trinity is mentioned for the first time in the visitation files of 1736 .
