The LM2.700 series were three-axle narrow - gauge rack-and-pinion locomotives of the Ferrovie Calabro Lucane (FCL) and later of the Ferrovie della Calabria (FC) in southern Italy . In 2010 the locomotives were converted to two-axle adhesion locomotives .
history
Until the late 1970s, poorly performing rail buses and the slow steam locomotives of the 500 series were the only rack-and-pinion drive vehicles on the Cosenza – Catanzaro line . In 1981 the Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM) supplied three three-axle diesel - hydraulic rack-and - pinion locomotives, which were modeled on the HGm 2/3 of the Chemin de fer du Montenvers . The locomotives powered by a relatively weak 550 HP Breda engine were used to push class M2.120 and M2.200 railcars over the rack section in Catanzaro .
With the division of the Ferrovie Calabro Lucane, the three SLM push locomotives ("spintori") came to the Ferrovie della Calabria. Since the appearance of the M4c rack-and-pinion rail cars, the laborious and labor- intensive pushing service became superfluous and the locomotives were only used for special trains. In 2010 they were modernized, fitted with a new diesel engine and the running axle and the gear drive removed in order to use them as shunting and auxiliary locomotives.
