The 3500 series is a narrow-gauge electric multiple unit operated by the Spanish railway company Ferrocarriles de Vía Estrecha ( FEVE ).

The vehicles coupled with a similar control car from the 6500 series ( wheel arrangement Bo'Bo '+ 2'2') were delivered from 1978. In 1977, 15 units (company numbers 3501 to 3515) were ordered from Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) for the Basque narrow-gauge network. When this network was awarded to the company EuskoTren , which was founded in 1982 , these vehicles were taken over by that company. 16 units (3516 to 3531) were reordered in 1980 for other lines of the FEVE network, 6 more (3532 to 3537) in 1983. The trains of the first series were initially stationed in Durango , but the first seven were soon after Errenteria for " El Topo ”from San Sebastian via Irún to the French town of Hendaye .

The capacity of the multiple- traction-capable trains proved to be insufficient, so as early as 1978 driver-free sidecars (5500 series) were ordered, which were placed between the railcars and the control cars. Another four sidecars were acquired for the "Topo" in order to be able to form four four-car trains. In 1983, railcars 3501 and 3508 were destroyed in Bilbao in a flood . They were replaced by new buildings with the same company numbers. In 1988, three EuskoTren trains (3006, 3006 and 3015) were converted for the "Bidexpress" express freight service between San Sebastian and Bilbao, but this did not prove itself. The trains were then adjusted to the standard design again.

The trains, which run on a track width of 1000 mm ( meter gauge ) under an overhead line with 1500 V, are 2550 mm wide and 3475 mm high, motor coaches, side cars and control cars are each 15.24 m long. The railcar weighs 30.9 t, the control car 25.7 t. The maximum speed is 80 km / h, the four electric motors of type TA 6788-H have a total output of 660 kW. Up to four units of the trains equipped with Scharfenberg couplers can run in multiple units.

The vehicles were modernized in the 1990s, and with further modifications from 1999 onwards, the trains were given air conditioning. Six converted units consisting of railcars and control cars of the second series bear the new series designation 3300 . The numbering was changed so that the railcar was given an odd number and the control car received the following even final number. Example: the railcar 3301 (formerly 3519) runs with the control car 3302 (formerly 6519).

The 15 railcars of the first series were largely parked in spring 2017, and the associated intermediate and control cars were sold to Ecuador . Car 3504 was taken out of stock in 2007 after an accident. The unit 3506/5506/6506 went to the railway museum Museo Vasco del Ferrocarril in Azpeitia .
