The Research Institute for Organic Farming (FiBL) is an independent research facility in Frick , Switzerland , which researches methods and applications of organic farming.

It is one of the leading research and information centers for organic farming . FiBL Switzerland employs over 170 people (2017). In 2013, the institute generated income of around 19.7 million francs.

history

FiBL was founded in 1973 as a private foundation by organic farmers together with scientists. It set itself the goal of supporting organic farmers through research projects and advice. The institute was located in Oberwil from 1974 and in Frick since 1997. The institute organized the 1st IFOAM conference in 1977 in Sissach and the 13th IFOAM conference in Basel in 2000. From 1990 to the end of March 2020, the institute was headed by Urs Niggli . On April 1, 2020, Knut Schmidtke, Marc Schärer and Lucius Tamm took over the management of FiBL Switzerland.

Cooperations

The sister institute FiBL Germany has existed since 2001 and FiBL Austria since 2004 . FiBL is a member of the International Association of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM - Organics International and has helped set up the International Society of Organic Agriculture Research (German International Society for Research in Organic Agriculture) ISOFAR. FiBL operates in Switzerland and maintains an extensive European research network. FiBL is also active in Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa.

The institute is run by the Federal Office for Agriculture, the Federal Office for the Environment, Forests and Landscape, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, the Directorate for Development and Cooperation, the agricultural offices of the cantons and municipalities as well as Coop, Bio Suisse , Hiscia, Migros and individuals financed. In addition, FiBL finances itself through numerous research contracts. The institute is also involved in numerous EU research projects and in projects of the German federal program “Organic Farming”.
