The FK Crvena zvezda Gnjlane ( Serbian - Cyrillic ФК Црвена звезда Гњилане ; in German "Red Star Gnjilane Football Club ") was a Yugoslav football club founded in 1945 and later a Serbian-Montenegrin football club from Gjilan . Due to the Kosovo war in 1999, the club had to stop playing for the time being and was eventually dissolved, as the proportion of Serbs in the city had fallen dramatically due to flight and displacement .

history

The association was founded in 1945 by several Serbs from the city of Gnjilane in what was then socialist Yugoslavia . The name of the association Crvena zvezda (" Red Star ") is originally the international symbol of the labor movement , which is also found on the association's coat of arms. Whether it should be referred to back then is not entirely clear today. During the times of Yugoslavia, the club mostly played in the lower leagues of the country. The greatest successes were celebrated in 1963 and 1985 when they won the championship of the Socialist Autonomous Province of Kosovo, a regional league within the Yugoslav football system or that of the Socialist Republic of Serbia , and when they rose to the 2nd league of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1998 . The club was one of the most famous football clubs from Kosovo.

During and after the Kosovo war in 1999, the situation of the club, its players and its members deteriorated dramatically. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) estimates that around 25,000 Serbs lived in the community until shortly before the outbreak of war . Due to flight and displacement during and after the war, the Serbs left the city entirely and the proportion in the entire community has fallen to 624 people.

The association was therefore forced to cease its existence for a certain period of time. The former home of the Verein, the Gradski stadion Gnjilane ("Municipal Stadium Gnjlane") has only been used by Albanian teams, today mainly by KF Drita, founded in 1947, and KF Gjilani, founded in 1995 . Because of this difficult situation for the club and its supporters even after a decade, the start of the game could not be continued. The association is therefore considered dissolved.
