In 1968 Ferrovia Lugano-Ponte Tresa ( FLP ) purchased three ABe 4/6 articulated railcars , that is, with first and second class and four driven axles with a total of six axles. They were given the numbers 10-12 at the FLP. The railcars largely corresponded to the ABFe 6/6 31-32 delivered to the FART in 1963 , although all three bogies were powered and there was also a luggage compartment.

In contrast to the existing FLP rolling stock, the railcars were equipped with compressed air brakes and automatic GF coupling of the tram type (GFT). To match the railcars, three B 33–35 trailer cars were purchased from SWP , which increased the space available at peak times. With this rolling stock, a half-hourly service was introduced on the FLP on September 29, 1968, for which two railcars were required; the third formed the reserve. In 1975 the clutch and brakes of the Z ° 8 postal car were adapted so that it could be carried by the ABe 4/6.

The ABe 4/6 were sold in 1977 (No. 12) and 78 (No. 10 and 11) to the SSIF , which adapted their electrical equipment and the couplings in the FART workshop in Locarno to the FART-ABDe 6/6 31-32 as well as had a toilet installed and put it back into operation as ABe 6/6 33–35 between 1979 and 1980. At the FLP, the multiple units were replaced by five new multiple units of the type RBS Be 4/8 (No. 21-25). Since these trains were not delivered until the end of 1978, the RBS Be 4/8 53 was initially used (1977-79); this multiple unit therefore bears the Lugano coat of arms to this day.

The articulated multiple units were manufactured by Schindler Waggon in Pratteln, the electrical equipment was supplied by the BBC subsidiary Tecnomasio Italiano Brown Boveri (TIBB). The two-part car body is supported in the middle under the box joint on a Jakobs bogie . The supplement to the electrical equipment installed by SSIF in 1979/80 was also supplied by TIBB.

The vehicles replaced the ABDe 4/4 in the regional trains on the Italian route section, while the newly acquired Be 4/8 41-42 took over this function on the Swiss route section (which in turn were later sold to FLP).

Railcar no. 34 derailed on October 31, 1981 as a result of incorrect operation and the resulting excessive speed on the descent towards Domodossola around one kilometer below the Coimo station in a curve. He slid down a wooded slope about 50 meters. The trees slowed the vehicle and kept it upright, which prevented worse. Some travelers suffered bruises, the rest got away with the horror. The railcar was torn apart and separated in the middle. The recovery was very difficult because the accident site was in an impassable area with no roads. Therefore, a provisional track was moved from the main line to the site of the accident, on which the two halves of the car were pulled up on December 2, 1982. The SSIF was supported in the rescue by SBB and BLS.
