The Type 1 draft was conceived by FSG in the late 1970s and built for several shipping companies from 1980. The series formed the basis for the further development of larger types of ships. Type 1 to Type 5 formed a model family of container ships from 1150 TEU to 1800 TEU, which were marketed by the parent company until the FSG was sold in 1982.
The ships are designed as versatile container ships with a far aft deckhouse . They are mainly used in container transport. The container capacity is 1150 TEU, of which 490 TEU can be stowed in the holds. Later this capacity was partially increased by other deck stowage plans. The ships have five holds , which are divided fore and aft by longitudinal panels and closed by pontoon hatch covers. There is a 40 foot deck space behind the deckhouse. The ships were developed for use in areas with poorly developed port infrastructure and could therefore be equipped with two on- board cranes, each with a capacity of 36 tons, arranged amidships . The first ships delivered for the Janssen shipping company did not have their own loading gear , the series of three for Indonesia received gantry slewing cranes, and the units for China used conventional electro-hydraulic slewing cranes.
The ships are powered by a K7SZ70 / 125BL two-stroke diesel engine from MAN with an output of 14,460 hp. A B&W 6L70MC engine with 10,051 kW was installed in the COSCO buildings. The motor acts directly on the controllable pitch propeller and enables a speed of around 19 knots . There are also three auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator available. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .
