The FS 981 series is a three-axle superheated steam locomotive of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) for standard-gauge railways with separate adhesion and gear drive system Winterthur .

history

The performance of the 980 series rack -and-pinion locomotives used on the Paola – Cosenza railway line, which was opened in 1915, did not meet the requirements adequately and the machines sometimes had to be used in double traction . Breda built with SLM license the row 981, a powerful development of the row 980. The 981 series is largely its predecessor by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM), the use of a steam superheater , however, allows an enlargement of the Vorstelllast . The machines with the numbers 981.001–981.008 delivered in 1922 were assigned to the Cosenza locomotive depot . With the locomotive 981.005 one example has been preserved there. Locomotive 981.001 is exhibited in the Piedmont Railway Museum in Savigliano , awaiting restoration.

The 981 series is based on the same concept as the 980 series. However, the use of the superheater led to a number of changes and an increase in output from 440  hp to 530 hp. The pulling force is 140  kN and the operating weight is 47.2 tons. The maximum speed in adhesion mode is 40 km / h and 15 km / h on rack sections.

Like its predecessor, the series is equipped with separate adhesion and gear drive system Winterthur. The gear drive is only in operation on rack sections where the machine works in a network system . The steam coming from the boiler first feeds the high-pressure cylinders of the adhesion drive and then the low-pressure cylinders of the gear drive. Because of the supply of low-pressure steam, the low pressure has triebwerk an approximately twice the speed as the high-pressure engine. The intermediate gear reduces the speed to that of the adhesion engine.

The Riggenbach counter-pressure brake is used as a service brake when driving downhill . In addition, there is a brake gear arranged on the first coupling axle and a band brake acting on the gear drive . The wagons of the train are braked with the usual Westinghouse air brakes.

The locomotives are equipped with steam heating for the cars presented.

commitment

After the rack section on the Cecina – Volterra line was shut down , all the machines came to the Paola – Cosenza cog railway. They were needed for the weak freight traffic and for the transport of a passenger train going through to Rome. After this traffic was stopped, all locomotives were decommissioned. Only 981.005 remained in operation and was used sporadically for special and agency trains. After the opening of the Santomarco Base Tunnel in 1987, the Paola – Cosenza cogwheel railway was discontinued and the 981 series lost its operational area.
