The FS 980 series is a three-axle steam locomotive of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) for standard gauge railways with separate adhesion and gear drive system Winterthur .

history

FS 980.001 in action between Saline and Volterra

The FS procured the first four locomotives of the 980 series for the train movement on the rack section Saline di Volterra- Volterra of the Cecina-Volterra railway line . The four machines were delivered in 1908 by the Swiss Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM) in Winterthur, a specialist in the manufacture of rack-and-pinion locomotives, and assigned to the Pisa locomotive depot . Starting in 1912, the SLM supplied eight more locomotives for use on the Paola – Cosenza railway line . On the occasion of the opening of the rack railway from Paola to Cosenza in 1915, eight of these locomotives were assigned to the Cosenza depot.

A class 980 locomotive was exhibited by SLM at the industrial exhibition in Turin .

The locomotives remained in service on the Saline – Volterra line until 1958. Over time, more modern vehicles were used between Paola and Cosenza and the 980 series was mainly used for freight transport. The locomotive 980.002 has been preserved and exhibited in the National Railway Museum in Pietrarsa .

Breda further developed the class 980 to the superheated steam locomotives of the class 981 .

The model for the 980 series was the narrow-gauge Brünigbahn locomotives HG 3/3 of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) with separate adhesion and gear drives. The four cylinders of the adhesion and gear drive of the Winterthur system described below are arranged one above the other in a common cast block . They all have the same diameter of 430 mm and the same piston stroke of 500 mm. The two cylinders arranged one above the other consist of a common cast block. On cogwheel sections, the two engines work in combination ; on adhesion sections , the mechanics of the upper low-pressure cylinders for the gear drive stand still and the lower cylinders work with simple steam expansion. Because the engine moved by the low-pressure cylinders has a ratio of around 2.4: 1, the low-pressure engine moves correspondingly faster. This creates the usual cylinder space ratio of the composite effect.

The adhesion drive takes place on the middle axis of the three axes. The drive gear is arranged 730 mm in front of the drive axle . Both engines feature controls the type Heusinger . The controls for both engine parts can only be operated together. The inner frame consists of two sheets of 22 mm thick. The boiler consists of two sections and contains 208 boiler tubes made of brass. The fire box is lowered between the frames and has a grate surface of 1.8 m². The fire box cover falls backwards, which is advantageous because of the inclined position of the boiler on rack and pinion railways. The evaporation heating surface is 88.4 m². On the outside of the frame, water tanks with a capacity of 3.3 m³ are installed on both sides . There is space for 1 ton of coal in the coal containers arranged in the driver's cab.

Three independent braking systems act on the locomotive. A counter pressure brake acts on the low pressure cylinders of the gear drive. Two band brakes are attached to the gear train , which are operated with the aid of a spindle in the driver's cab. A handbrake acts on the first and third coupling axles, the first axle also being equipped with a brake gear. An additional Westinghouse air brake acts on the cars lined up in the train.

The equipment also includes a device for steam heating the cars presented, a Hasler system speedometer, two Friedmann system oil pumps and two safety valves that are located on the steam dome .
