The E.326 electric locomotives of Ferrovie dello Stato were designed for express train service.
They were built by the Milanese manufacturer Breda in two sub-series: the 001 and 002 were delivered in 1930, the 003 to 012 in 1932.
The E.326 were designed uniformly with the E.626 and the E.428 . All locomotives have the same axle box designs, the express locomotives also received standardized bogies, the same single-axle drive and the same traction motors. The brake parts of all locomotives were interchangeable. In the electrical area, too, many parts were interchangeable; the pantographs, switching devices, resistors, air compressors and auxiliary machines.
The performance program of the locomotive envisaged the transport of 450 t trailer load on the plain at 150 km / h. The same load should be transported at 16.7 ‰ at 90 km / h.
The planned maximum speed of 150 km / h could not be achieved for technical reasons, since in the 1930s there was no railway in Italy that allowed this speed. Therefore the speed had to be reduced to 130 km / h and later to 105 km / h for safety reasons. The main areas of application for the locomotives were the routes from Bologna to Verona and the route Bologna - Rimini - Ancona . Due to the high axle pressure, the locomotives could only be used on selected routes. This led to the procurement of the FS E.428 . In recent years the speed has been limited to 95 km / h. The locomotives were retired by 1982.
One locomotive, the E.326.004, has been preserved in the Pietrarsa Railway Museum .
Technical equipment
The main frame of the locomotive is made strong enough so that the locomotive could easily be lifted at the end points. They had a single axle drive based on Giuseppe Bianchi with double motors, a hollow shaft and leaf springs. The dual arrangement of traction motors transmitted the torque to the wheel spiders via a hollow shaft and leaf springs. The mounting was articulated, so unevenness in the track could easily be transferred. The running wheels mounted in the bogie had a wheelbase of 2,200 mm, the straightening was carried out with reset devices after cornering.
