The E.424 series is an electric locomotive series from the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato .

history

The E.424 series was procured in the 1940s for the transport of light passenger trains . Due to the poor condition of the superstructure, the locomotives had to have the lowest possible axle load. Between 1986 and 1993, 105 machines were rebuilt. They were optimized for push-pull train operation and for a top speed of 120 km / h.

technical features

The locomotives were characterized by their excellent cornering ability. Originally equipped with multiple controls and front doors for transition to other vehicles, these facilities were soon removed due to technical defects. From the mid-1980s onwards, 105 locomotives were modernized for push-pull operation . The luggage compartment was locked, an extinguishing system installed, the gear ratio uniformly adjusted for 120 km / h, they received new compressors, a new central lubrication system and the 78-pin cable for push -pull train control, which is common in Italy . Further adjustments were the installation of the door control, anti- skid protection and the driver's cab signaling RS4_Codici . The conversion was made easier by the fact that the series was equipped with an automatic switchgear from the start.

Overall, the locomotives were delivered in four series in which two different engines were used. The gear ratio is also not identical in all of them, so that some locomotives reached 120 km / h right from the start.

As was common with the FS at that time, all locomotives were equipped with a contactor control. In contrast to other railways, an automatic shooter control "Avviatore Automatico" was installed. As a result, the engine driver only had to set the desired interconnection of the motors ("series" - all 4 motors in series or "parallelo" - each 2 motors in parallel). At the transition in between, the series resistance to the motor was automatically reduced further and further down to zero. Another possibility of speed control is the field weakening by means of switchable series resistors in the excitation circuit.

commitment

After 2001, only the modernized copies were used in passenger train service. They were increasingly displaced by the new E.464 , due to the high maintenance costs and the necessary expensive equipment with the SCMT train protection system , the last missions were ended in January 2007.
