Fabrice Bénichou (born April 5, 1966 in Madrid , Spain ) is a former French professional boxer . He was EBU European bantamweight and featherweight champion, and IBF world champion in super bantamweight.

Career

Fabrice Bénichou boxed as a professional from July 1984 to September 2006.

On January 30, 1988, he won the EBU bantamweight title by a knockout victory in the ninth round against Thierry Jacob , but lost his first title defense in April 1988 against Vincenzo Belcastro . On September 26, 1988 he boxed for the first time for the IBF world championship in super bantamweight, but lost by TKO against José Sanabria .

In the rematch on March 10, 1989 Fabrice Bénichou won just under points and thus the IBF title, which he was then able to defend against the South African Fransie Badenhorst and the Puerto Rican Ramón Cruz. On March 10, 1990, he lost the title in his third defense to Welcome Ncita .

On October 18, 1990, he boxed for the WBA World Superbantamweight Championship and lost just on points against Luis Mendoza . He won the EBU featherweight title on May 25, 1991 unanimously against the British John Davison and then defended the belt prematurely against the Italians Salvatore Bottiglieri and Vincenzo Limatola.

On March 14, 1992 he boxed again for the IBF World Championship, this time in featherweight, but lost just on points against Manuel Medina . He lost another championship fight for the WBC featherweight belt on September 12, 1992 by TKO against Paul Hodkinson .

Until 1998 he boxed only sporadically and lost, among other things, in two EBU title fights against Maurizio Stecca and Spencer Oliver . After a break from fighting of almost eight years, he returned to the ring in 2005, but ended his career for good after a defeat on September 30, 2006.
