The specialist for leather processing has been a new state-recognized training occupation in Germany since August 1, 2011 according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). It replaces the training occupation shoe and leather goods stepper , the training regulations of which date from 1964 and are outdated. The duration of the training is two years. Training takes place at the company and vocational school .

Skilled workers for leather processing work in companies in the shoe and leather goods industry, in particular for the production of shoe uppers, bags, small leather goods, upholstery and car seat covers, in sample and series production.

  • set up machines and systems and operate them

  • make connections by sewing, welding and gluing
  • create and attach decorative and functional accessories
  • assess the quality and take quality assurance measures
  • observe the principles of occupational safety, health and environmental protection and customer orientation

The examination requirements in these training regulations correspond to the specifications of the main committee of the BiBB

midterm exam

In order to provide the trainee with information about their performance level, an intermediate examination is provided for this training occupation. In the “Preparing and joining” test area, the trainee should prove that he

a) Define work steps, apply technical documents and select manufacturing processes,
b) assign and use leather types,
c) Determine and use materials and auxiliary materials,
d) Select and use tools, devices, machines and technical equipment,
e) check and assign parts,
f) prepare parts,
g) Assemble the chuck parts

such as

h) can take into account measures for work organization, for safety and health protection at work, for environmental protection, for economic efficiency and for quality assurance.

The intermediate examination is carried out in the form of an examination piece. Furthermore, the trainee must work on written assignments. The exam takes a total of four hours. During this time, the examination piece is prepared and the written tasks of 90 minutes are processed.

The final examination also determines the professional ability to act in this profession.

The final examination consists of a total of three examination areas:

  1. "Manufacturing" examination area
  2. Examination area "Production technology and quality assurance"
  3. Examination area "Economics and Social Studies"

"Manufacturing" examination area

In this examination area, the trainee should either manufacture the uppers of a pair of shoes or a semi-finished leather product. It should be demonstrated that he

a) define work steps,
b) cutting or punching parts,
c) prepare parts,
d) assemble parts,
e) create decorative and special seams,
f) manufacture and attach accessories,
g) Check parts and work results,
h) Take into account measures for work organization, for safety and health protection at work, for environmental protection and for economic efficiency, and
i) show technical background as well as justify the procedure for producing the test pieces

The trainee has a total of five hours available for this work. During this time, a technical discussion lasting a maximum of 15 minutes will be held with the examination board.

Examination area "Production technology and quality assurance"

The trainee should work on written assignments in this examination area in 120 minutes. It should be demonstrated that he

a) Determine and assess materials and auxiliary materials, define properties and intended use,
b) explain the functionality of tools, devices, machines and technical equipment,
c) Recognize and eliminate faults in machines,
d) calculate material requirements,
e) apply quality assurance measures

Examination area "Economics and Social Studies"

In this examination area, the trainee should demonstrate in 60 minutes that he is able to present and assess general economic and social relationships in the professional and working world.

Weighting of the examination areas

The examination areas are weighted as follows:

production 60 percent
Production technology and quality assurance 30 percent
Economics and Social Studies 10 percent

Passage regulation

The trainee has passed his final exam if the performance

  1. in the overall result with at least "sufficient",
  2. in the test area “production” at least “sufficient” and
  3. have not been rated "unsatisfactory" in any examination area.

An oral supplementary examination of around 15 minutes in duration is possible in the examination areas "Production Technology and Quality Assurance" or "Economics and Social Studies" if the final examination can be passed. The prerequisite is that these examination areas were rated worse than "sufficient". A supplementary oral examination to improve the grade is not possible.

Credit for vocational training

If the trainee has passed his final examination and would like to start further training in a related profession, the duration of the training can be shortened in agreement with the training company. The following credit periods are possible:

  • If you continue your training as a shoe maker : 24 months
  • If you continue your apprenticeship as a saddler : 12 months

The examinations performed as a specialist in leather processing cannot be taken into account.
