Specialist for road and traffic technology is an apprenticeship that is tailored to the needs of public road and traffic administration in Germany. The federally standardized job description was created by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology on July 21, 2000. The precursors of the job description were the road construction technician ( Hessen ) or the planning technician ( Rhineland-Palatinate )

Apprenticeships for the job are offered in public administration, engineering offices and road construction companies. The training to become a specialist in road and traffic technology takes three years. The training takes place at the company and vocational school. There are no specializations in subjects or areas of focus. The learning content of the first year of training is identical to the content of the water management specialist .

The job description includes the activities of road planning, construction preparation, construction supervision , road maintenance and road operation . This requires structural calculations, constructions, surveying , obtaining building permits and taking account of nature conservation in road construction.

If, after passing the final examination, they are accepted into the public service , road and traffic technology specialists are employed as technical employees under the collective agreement . The Associate degree holder to study the construction engineer specializing in civil engineering . In conjunction with a university entrance qualification, it is possible to study civil engineering . In some federal states, this course is possible without a university entrance qualification.
