The Fachschule für Luftfahrzeugführer (FFL) is the oldest private flight school for professional pilots in Germany. It is only surpassed by the air traffic school of the former state-owned Lufthansa as the oldest flight school, but this is currently mainly open to (prospective) employees of the airline. The predecessor company was founded in 1963. The company is located at the Essen / Mülheim airfield, its legal form is GmbH .

Since 1963, the school has primarily trained professional pilots in theory and practice and prepares them for the pilot examination carried out by the Federal Aviation Office . In the past 40 years, the FFL has accompanied around 5,800 student pilots up to their examination to become a commercial pilot , making it second in the industry after the Lufthansa pilot school , which has trained 6,700 pilots since it was founded, mainly for the needs of its own group and later also for the German armed forces.

Implementation of training

The theoretical training covers the areas of aviation technology , meteorology , radio technology , electrical engineering and aviation medicine .

For practical preparation, the school relies on an aircraft fleet made up of tried and tested models from international aircraft construction and modern flight simulators . The fleet includes a Piper Archer III with an Avidyne Entegra glass cockpit, four Cessna 152 , two Cessna 172 , a Socata TB 20 and two Diamond DA 42 TDI .

Training goals

The FFL prepares the flight students for the exams of the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt for the following licenses:

The school also offers a wide variety of refresher, supplementary and preparatory courses:

Cooperations

In cooperation with the University of Pune , the FFL will offer an engineering degree with subsequent professional pilot training from autumn 2013. The dual course of study should last four years and be completed with a Bachelor's degree. The two-year theoretical part of the training takes place at the University of Pune and the subsequent practical flight training by the FFL at the Essen / Mülheim airfield .
