Factorio is an economic simulation computer game set in a futuristic scenario, developed and published by Wube Software. It was released on February 25, 2016 as early access for Windows , macOS and Linux . On August 14, 2020, Factorio left the Early Access phase and is in version 1.0.0. available as a full version.

Gameplay

General

The game is kept in simple isometric graphics . The player is stranded on a strange planet as a result of an accident. At the beginning of the game, the player himself has to search for raw materials on the undeveloped planet and mine them. First of all, copper and iron ore are needed and processed in stone ovens, but coal must also be procured to fire these ovens and later for the power supply. The materials produced are used to manufacture conveyor belts, gripper arms and assembly machines. The aim of the game is to produce science packages that can be used to research new technologies and advance automation. The complexity increases steadily, so towards the end of the game, for example, complex oil refineries and production facilities are required.

The alien planet is colonized by aliens who attack the player and his factories and evolve as a result of increased environmental pollution. Various handguns, missiles , turrets , tanks and railway guns are available to the player for defense. However, there is also the option of the aliens only attacking when the player attacks first.

The game is "won" by shooting a rocket into space , whereby the player can continue the game indefinitely and further expand the factory.

Multiplayer

In multiplayer mode , players can build a factory together both locally and via the Internet . Unless otherwise specified, all players share the researched technologies on a server and can also exchange construction plans. The hard limit for players who can play on one server at the same time is 65,535. However, this number was never reached; the largest servers have so far managed to cope with up to 400 players simultaneously.

Modifiability

The content of the basic game can be modified and expanded from scratch using any number of so-called mods . These are developed in the Lua programming language and can be downloaded from the official mod portal as well as directly in the game.

development

In 2012 Michal Kovařík started the development, at the end of 2012 Tomas Kozelek joined as programmer and Albert Bertolin as animator . A financing campaign was then started in February 2013 via Indiegogo , which was successfully completed in March 2013. As a result, the first alpha version of the game was released in March 2013 . In September 2014 the developers founded the studio Wube Software in order to develop the game with a larger team. It has been available on Steam as an Early Access game since the beginning of 2016 . The publication date is planned for August 14, 2020. The developer maxim “It is done, when it is done” - an allusion to the long development time of Duke Nukem Forever by 3D Realms - has repeatedly led to deadlines being postponed. With version 1.0.0, the Early Access phase could be exited on August 14, 2020 after more than 7 years.

reception

"There is something wonderfully pleasing about sitting back and watching your mechanical arms swing about, lifting and transporting your materials onto belts that whisk them to other arms and other factories and other belts."

- Christopher Livingston : Rock, Paper, Shotgun

300,000 copies of the game were sold by the beginning of 2016 and over 900,000 by the end of 2016. At the end of May 2017, one million units were announced.

By February 2019 there were 1.7 million units sold, by the end of 2019 the mark of two million units had been reached.
