Driving personnel is defined in the Working Hours Act ( Germany ) or the Driving Personnel Act / Regulation and EU Regulation 561/2006 (possibly also AETR). The drivers have to regularly take part in training courses on the safety of the means of transport as well as first aid . The transport company must reimburse these costs if it is unable to offer the training itself.

The driving staff has the right, under certain conditions, to exclude participants from driving after a previous (possibly multiple) warning or in the event of illness. They must then arrange for another means of transport at their own expense.

The drivers are obliged to take a break of at least a quarter of an hour without being asked when driving longer than four hours. In addition, after at least four hours of uninterrupted driving, there is an obligation to take a longer break of at least one hour.
