description

The Fairhaven area is south of Bellingham, and is bordered by Bellingham Bay to the west and Western Washington University to the northeast.

Since 1989, Bellingham has been the southernmost station of the Alaska Marine Highway System , a system of ferries in the state of Alaska. The Bellingham Cruise Terminal is also the starting point for the summer passenger ferry service to the San Juan Islands and Victoria in Canada , which is operated by Victoria / San Juan Cruises . Nearby is Fairhaven Station, a small transport hub that functions both as Bellingham's train station for the Amtrak's Cascades connection and as a Greyhound bus depot. There are connections to local taxis and local transport. The Whatcom Transportation Authority recently introduced a fifteen-minute bus service on the Plum Line . In Fairhaven's Historical District , the Pickford Outdoor Cinema offers open-air cinema every weekend during the summer .

Historical district

In the center of the Fairhaven area is the Fairhaven Historical District , which is characterized by a seasonal farmers market as well as a number of restaurants and shops. All new buildings in this area must outwardly conform to the traditional 19th century style as defined in the Bellingham Municipal Code, Design Review District, section 20.26 .

history

Fairhaven 1890

Daniel J. Harris, resident in the area since 1854, bought land along the coast and founded Fairhaven in 1883. Around 1889 he sold all of his property to contractors like Nelson Bennett and Charles Xavier Larrabee , who wanted to develop Fairhaven into a city the size of Seattle or Tacomas.

Fairhaven competed with many other coastal cities in Washington for the position as the end point of the Great Northern Railroad , but the bid ultimately went to Seattle. During this period of competition from the late 1870s to the mid 1880s, Fairhaven adopted its iconic 19th century style and gained aesthetic appeal in terms of architecture and design. Even after it was decided that Seattle would be the terminus of the Great Northern Railway , the population and aesthetic buildings continued to grow until the late 1890s. Fairhaven was officially recognized as a local authority on May 13, 1890 . on October 27, 1903, the citizens of Fairhaven and two neighboring towns on Bwellingham Bay, Whatcom City and Sehome, voted to merge into a town called Bellingham. On December 28, 1903, the new town of Bellingham was officially established.
