Hourglass Buttress (English for hourglass pillar ) is a 2790 m high rock massif in the west Antarctic Marie-Byrd-Land . In the La Gorce Mountains of Queen Maud Mountains , it towers 5.5 km west of Beard Peak .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it using the United States Navy's own surveys and aerial photographs from 1960 to 1964. Scientists from Arizona State University conducted geological studies between 1980 and 1981 as part of the United States Antarctic Research Program . It owes its name to a snow channel on the front, the shape of which is reminiscent of an hourglass .
