Fakhruddin Ahmed

Fakhruddin Ahmed ( Bengali : ফখরুদ্দীন আহমদ , Phakharuddīn Āhamad ; born May 1, 1940 in Munshiganj ) is a Bengali economist, bureaucrat and former head of the Central Bank of Bangladesh . After President Iajuddin Ahmed declared the country to be in a state of emergency , he was appointed Chief Advisor of the transitional government on January 12, 2007 , until Sheikh Hasina Wajed took over the post of Prime Minister on January 6, 2009 .

Fakhruddin Ahmed studied economics at the University of Dhaka and Williams College, USA . He then received his PhD from the prestigious Princeton University .

He started his professional career at the University of Dhaka . Then he became an administrative officer - first in the civil service of Pakistan , and after the independence of Bangladesh for his new state. From 1978 to 2001 he worked for the World Bank in Washington, where he rose to Vice-President. He left the World Bank in October 2001 and became head of the State Bank of Bangladesh ( Bangladesh Bank ). His term of office ended on April 30, 2005. On June 1, 2005, he was appointed Executive Director of the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation, an umbrella organization for small loans in Bangladesh.
