The remains of Falštejn Castle , also Falkenštejn (German Falstein , or Fallstein ) are located three kilometers northeast of Konstantinovy Lázně ( Konstantinsbad ) on the cadastre of Poloučany in the Tepler highlands in the Czech Republic.
geography
The remains of the spur castle are located by the Starý Mlýn ( old mill ) on the right side above the valley of the Úterský potok in the nature park "Úterský potok". In addition to the Úterský potok, to which the castle rock drops steeply to the east, the spur is in the north by a nameless stream flowing down from Konstantinovy Lázně and to the southwest and south by a brook that rises there, which at the foot of the castle over the Falkenštejnský vodopád ( Falkensteiner waterfall ) falls down to Úterský potok, flowed over it.
Surrounding places are Starý Mlýn in the north, Ostrov u Bezdružic in the northeast, Krsov in the east, Křelovice , Hlaváčkův Mlýn and Pakoslav in the southeast, Dlouhé Hradiště in the south, Poloučany and Konstantinovy Lázně in the southwest, Nová Ves in the west and Potín in the west. The Ostrov fortress is located a good kilometer to the southeast.
history
Little is known about the castle. Based on archaeological research, it is assumed that it was built as a small aristocratic seat in the 14th century and was destroyed during the Hussite Wars . The oldest written mention was made in 1460 in a property register of Dietrich IV von Guttenstein on Trpist on the occasion of the transfer of a morning gift to his wife Elisabeth von Schönwald, whereby only the brook at and below the Falstein is listed. A similar mention comes from the year 1497, in which the ownership rights of Elisabeth were confirmed after the death of her husband and son. However, since both documents only mention the Falstein stream, it remains unclear whether the castle still existed at that time. In 1566 it was explicitly referred to in the land register of the Weseritz rulership as the "desolate Fallstein Castle".
investment
The castle Falštejn consisted of a ditch protected and ramparts, larger outer bailey with trapezoidal plan, which was located on the connection of the spur to the plateau to the west. To the east of this, on the spur, separated from the outer bailey by a moat and walls, lay the two castle cores on the summit of the spur or in the rocks.
Around 1880 the remains of the castle core could still be seen above ground . Today only the remains of trenches and ramparts are visible on the wooded spur. No remains of the buildings have been preserved from the front core of the castle. In the rear core of the castle you can find wall remnants, which presumably come from a residential tower , as well as traces of a probably wooden building carved into the rock in the access area.
The complex has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958.
Falkenštejnský vodopád
At the southern foot of the castle rock is the Falkenštejnský vodopád ( Falkensteiner waterfall ) ⊙ . A nameless brook about 300 m long plunges 50 m before its mouth in the Úterský potok through a crevice five meters deep.
